The United Nations Of Commission On The Status Of Women (UNCSW) held a session earlier today to discuss the topic of Women’s Reproductive Autonomy. This is an important topic for women’s rights as there is a high death rate of women due to illegal abortion and Female Genital Mutilation (FGM).

The UNCSW mentioned their stance towards abortion and the use of contraceptives. Delegates mentioned a few problems such as rape, lack of knowledge on abortion, contraceptives and so on. Delegates of some countries such as Turkmenistan mentioned their concern at the number of women from their country do not even know what abortion is. The delegate of Denmark mentioned how people should be educated in contraceptives and measures to prevent pregnancy, to consider prevention as a solution to abortion. The delegate of India mentioned how women in India are unable to obtain trial dates before the deadline for legal abortion.

There are some countries who do not support abortions as it is an act of taking away an unborn life. Others mentioned that the religious groups believe that it is not allowed in their religion to have an abortion or use contraceptives. Therefore, delegates mentioned raising the awareness of what options are available to women such as contraceptives or abortion under some conditions such as unwanted pregnancy due to rape or when health of the mother is negatively affected by the pregnancy.

The delegate of Russia mentioned how Russia does not support abortion unless under certain situations. This is to increase the population of Russians to battle against the declining population. The delegate of Russia also mentioned increasing education on use of contraceptives in order to reduce abortion rates. The delegate of Russia also mentioned how abortion would affect the probability of getting pregnant again, which would make it hard for women who wants to get pregnant later on in life, affecting the population of the country. The delegate of Russia mentioned how countries not supporting abortion does not mean that they do not support women reproductive autonomy.

UNCSW will continue to discuss about more ways to help in Women Reproductive Autonomy to provide women around the world with more freedom to make decisions concerning them.
